Fernando works at the New York Power Authority (NYPA) in the Technology and Innovation Group. He is involved with conceptual design and implementation of the following Smart Grid strategic initiatives: NYPA Integrated Smart Operation Center, Communication Backbone, Sensor Deployment, Synchrophasor Deployment, Digital Substation using IEC 61850, Continuous Protection System Monitoring, Next Generation Energy Management System, Common Information Model and Network Model Manager. Fernando’s previous experience includes technical and management positions at a Regional Transmission Organization, a NERC Region, electric utilities with bulk power system operation, a global consulting firm with energy and technology practice, and a leading global oil and gas company with optical sensor division. Fernando is an active member of two Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) working groups and a contributor to the Utilities Technology Council (UTC) journal. He was a member of the NERC Congestion Management Task Force, Chair of the NPCC Available Transfer Capability Working Group, and Chair of the IEEE Springfield Massachusetts section. Mr. Saavedra is a Registered Professional Engineer, a Certified Project Management Professional, and a Senior Member of the IEEE. He holds Master of Business Administration and Master of Electric Power Engineering degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Master of Electrical Engineering from The City College of New York, Electric Power Distribution Systems Diploma from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and completed one year Executive Education Program at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management of Northwestern University.
