Una Nowling is a Project Manager and Senior Consultant at Black & Veatch with more than 28 years of experience. She assists utilities and energy companies with technical and scientific studies in the energy field and has managed more than 200 projects in her career. She is also a Professor of Engineering at the University of Missouri, frequent technical author, syndicated newspaper technical writer, and a public radio hostess. In 2012 Ms. Nowling “came out” as an intersex individual who underwent gender transition, thus also becoming a transgender woman. As a result of the success of that process, facilitated by a progressive supportive culture at Black & Veatch and her university, she has worked with Human Resources departments in a consulting role across the United States and around the world, presenting on support for Diversity and Inclusion as well as gender equity in the workplace at major conferences, such as the SWE National Conference in 2016. She is the recipient of the 8th Annual “STEMMY” Award as a WiSTEMM Champion for fostering and mentoring diversity and inclusion across the gender spectrum to break down the gender divide. She has continued this work training and assisted more than 40 other companies, such as Bayer-Monsanto, JLL Commercial Real Estate, Hallmark Cards, etc., and was honored by attending the Harvard Society of Fellows as a guest in recognition of her efforts to increase diversity in the STEM field. She has also worked with and presented at numerous universities and K-12 schools and worked with counseling and administrative staff at several educational learning facilities.
