David Sinclair
Vice President, Energy Supply and Analysis
Louisville Gas & Electric/Kentucky Utilities

Among David’s responsibilities at LG&E and KU are the development of their integrated resource plans which includes evaluating future technologies like energy storage and overseeing the Technology Research and Analysis group that operates the companies’ Energy Storage Research and Demonstration site at their E.W. Brown Station. The site, which has been in operation since 2017, is a collaboration with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and allows LG&E and KU to test and evaluate the potential benefits of energy storage and battery technologies. In addition to physically testing battery technology, LG&E and KU under David’s direction, have been studying how storage might be integrated with solar generation to serve customers. In December 2018, the companies’ published on their website a study entitled “Using solar and storage to meet 100% of the electricity requirements of a distribution circuit: A case study for LG&E Highland 1103 circuit.” This unique study used actual 5-minute load and irradiance data to determine the optimal amount of solar generation and storage required to serve the full electricity needs of a 9 MW residential/small commercial distribution circuit. David is also responsible for: • coal and gas procurement for the companies’ 7,500 MW generation fleet, • wholesale electricity market activities, and • real-time generation dispatch. David has more than 30 years of experience in the utility industry and has been with LG&E and KU since 1994, holding various positions in their independent power, energy marketing, and utility businesses. He previously had strategic planning, finance, and sales forecasting positions at Arizona Public Service Company and Salt River Project and was an economist for the state of Arizona. David holds a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Science in economics from Arizona State University, and a Bachelor of Arts in economics from the University of Missouri, Kansas City.
