Monaghan grew up in a village of 700 people in southwest Scotland dreaming of a swashbuckling life of travel, adventure, and languages. She got a more humble and meaningful version of that dream by becoming a correspondent for Reuters, the international news agency, where she worked for a decade from Moscow, Kyiv, Dublin, and Washington, following Secretaries of State Madeleine Albright and Colin Powell around the world.
