Dirk Rice began farming in 1985, the year his dad started experimenting with no-till. Through the years the family farm has seen an evolution of minimum till and no-till practices to the point that in 2018 100% of his corn acres will be planted using strip-till and 100% of his bean acres will be planted into a cover crop. Dirk’s goal is to be able to put a dollar value on the benefits cover crops bring to his farm whether it is through reduced fertilizer or herbicide use or the increase in organic matter and improved water holding capacity he expects to realize.
