Vicki Spitalnick is an Innovation Specialist at Pine Crest School in Boca Raton, FL, working with PK- 8th grade students in the schools iLab. Vicki has been a self proclaimed “crafter” since her days in summer camp where she honed her skills with any materials available. Previous to Pine Crest, Vicki was a 1st and 3rd grade gifted classroom teacher at Poinciana STEM Magnet school where she integrated technology and maker projects into her regular curriculum. Project based, hands-on learning has been integrated into her classroom curriculum for years. Her classrooms have contained a “Tinkering” section complete with bins of materials for “making” including: pipe cleaners, duct tape, foam, popsicle sticks, zip ties, straws and more. These supplies, were used independently or in conjunction with items students design and create in the maker lab. This crafting turned making mentality has proven engaging and exciting for both students and teachers alike.
