Mario Hamel graduated in mechanical engineering from École Polytechnique de Montréal in 1986. He joined GE Hydro as a Turbine Mechanical Design Engineer. After 10 years of detail design work, he was promoted to take Project Engineer role. During those years at GE Hydro, he had the opportunity to work on several major projects across the world. He was the Senior Project Engineer and Technical Consortium Lead (Voith‐GE–Siemens) for Three Gorges project. Mario also worked on Eastmain 1A as Senior Project Engineer for for Voith Hydro. He joined Andritz Hydro in 2010 and led Mica Units 5 and 6 project and Muskrat Fall project as the Senior Project Engineer for Turbine, Generator and BOP.
