Robert L. Smith, Ph.D., NCC, CFT, FPPR, served as the 63rd President, 2014-2015, of the American Counseling Association, ACA, is a Past President of the National Career Development Association, NCDA, and, the International Association of Marriage and Family Counseling, IAMFC. He has consulted with the Navy’s Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program and worked in private practice treating substance and behavioral addictions. Dr. Smith is Department Chair and Professor of Counseling and Educational Psychology at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi, as well as the Doctoral Program Coordinator. He is the co-editor of the best-selling text Substance Abuse Counseling: Theory and Practice and author/editor of the recent text Treatment Strategies for Substance and Process Addictions, that devotes complete chapters to the most frequently cited behavioral addictions; gambling, sex, work, exercise, shopping and internet/gaming. Dr. Smith has numerous presentations in the U.S. and abroad including topics on: Solution Focused Thinking, Counseling, and Living, The Joy of Working with Couples and Families, The Significance of Vision and Resiliency, Intentional Collaboration and Leadership, and Substance & Process Addictions: Evidence based Treatment Strategies.
