Steven L. Schaeffer currently serves as Chief of Staff in the Immediate Office of the Inspector General. Previously, as the OIG's Assistant Inspector General for Audit, since January 2000, Mr. Schaeffer directed the Office of Audit (OA), in auditing and evaluating the business and program applications for an entity with income in excess of $984 billion and outlays of over $977 billion annually. Under his tenure, OA issued 1,480 reports with approximately $52 billion in monetary findings through Fiscal Year (FY) 2015. Over this period, completion time for reports decreased from approximately 550 days to 240 days and the Agency agreed with about 93 percent of OA's recommendations. The Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency has recognized the quality of OA work. Since 2000, the Council has recognized OA with 50 Awards for Excellence and with several of its highest awards, the Glenn-Roth Exemplary Service Award and the Alexander Hamilton Award. An employee of SSA for over 30 years, Mr. Schaeffer developed and issued SSA’ s first audited financial statement in FY 1987 and led the development and production of the Agency's Performance and Accountability Report through FY 1998. He has received numerous awards including a Presidential Rank Award-2009; four Commissioner Citations (the Agency's highest honor award); one of the first recipients of the Chief Financial Officers Council Committee Impact Award; and a National Performance Review"Hammer" for developing and issuing the first Accountability Report in the Federal Government.
