Perry Skeath
Assistant Director of Research
Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine

Dr. Skeath is a Stanford graduate who founded and led a micromachined precision spray device company for 10 years (e.g., medical nebulizers). He prefers thinking from a product development perspective rather than a research publication perspective. The wearable monitoring device development team at the University of Arizona began with determining the endogenous concentrations of clinically important biomarkers in sweat. As relationships with manufacturers and commercial marketers were developed we became very involved in developing prototype hardware along with biomarker chemistry and human subject clinical validation. Our team has a very nice marriage of medicine, analytical chemistry and engineering aimed at wearable product development. We are branching out into other types of wearable monitors, including new types of physiological monitors and tools for cosmetics. We have a very high interest in ways to bridge the innovation “valley of death” between university research and commercial production. Our activities in engineering education are oriented toward product development skills in real-life commercial projects rather than research skills within academic grants.
