Nathaniel C. Kummerfeld is an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) for the United States Attorney’s Office – Eastern District of Texas. His responsibilities include the investigation and prosecution of health care fraud, cyber and intellectual property crimes, white collar fraud, identity theft, and asset forfeiture. Mr. Kummerfeld is the Health Care Fraud Coordinator, a Computer Hacking Intellectual Property (CHIP) Point of Contact, and the Stolen Identity Refund Fraud (SIRF) Coordinator for the Eastern District. Prior to becoming an AUSA in July 2012, Mr. Kummerfeld was a Special Assistant United States Attorney (SAUSA) for healthcare matters, including fraud, identity theft, kickbacks, and HIPAA offenses, for the USAO – EDTx. Prior to joining the United States Attorney’s Office (USAO) in 2009, Mr. Kummerfeld was an Assistant District Attorney (ADA) in Smith County, Texas. Mr. Kummerfeld received his law degree from Baylor Law School. During law school, Mr. Kummerfeld clerked for The Honorable Judith K. Guthrie, United States Magistrate Judge for the Eastern District of Texas, the United States Department of Justice – National Security Division, Counterterrorism Section, and the Suffolk County (Boston, Massachusetts) District Attorney’s Office – Narcotics and Asset Forfeiture Unit. Prior to law school, Mr. Kummerfeld earned a bachelor’s degree from Baylor University, served as aide-de-camp to United States Senator John W. Warner of Virginia, and earned a master’s degree from The London School of Economics (LSE). Mr. Kummerfeld has received awards from the United States Department of Health and Human Services – Office of the Inspector General (HHS-OIG) and the Department of Justice (DOJ).
