Passed away on January 1, 2019. At the time, Dr. Michael J. Sale is currently an independent consultant working in the areas of renewable energy, water resources, and environmental conservation. Prior to February 2008 when he retired from Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), he served as Group Leader for Applied Science and Technology in ORNL’s Environmental Sciences Division. He is an expert in a wide range of water resources issues, especially those related to energy development and aquatic ecosystem management. Dr. Sale's academic background includes a B.S. in Zoology from the University of Michigan, a M.S. in Aquatic Ecology from the University of Illinois, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering and Science from the University of Illinois. He has managed a wide range of assessment projects at ORNL for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission since 1983. He was Program Manager for ORNL’s research and development under the original DOE Hydropower Program and has been the senior advisor to the new DOE WaterPower Program for hydropower in 2009 and 2010. Dr. Sale has also served on a number of national advisory panels and technical working groups related to water resources, such as the Task Group on Water Availability and Use for the interagency Committee on Environmental and Natural Resources, the Science Advisory for the Trinity River Restoration Program in California, and DOE’s Climate Change Science Program. He is a Fellow Member of the American Water Resources Association.
