Susan Skemp has diverse experience across industry, government, professional associations and academia. She has a broad background in ground breaking aerospace research and technology at Pratt & Whitney (31 years retired in 2004), Federal policy as a Fellow, in the Office of Science and Technology Policy, Executive Office of the President (2004-2006), and leadership in professional engineering associations, including serving as President, American Society of Mechanical Engineers (2002-2003). She joined Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in 2008 as the Executive Director for the Southeast National Marine Renewable Energy Center (SNMREC). She has developed a multi-disciplinary program at the University to investigate, test and evaluate the potential of harnessing power to generate base-load electricity from the ocean currents. Under her leadership, FAU was successful in June 2014 in being granted the first and only lease by the U.S. Department of Interior to conduct marine hydrokinetic ocean energy research and testing in federal waters. Ms. Skemp earned her B.S. in Mechanical engineering in 1981 at FAU. She is a Fellow of ASME as well as an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). Ms. Skemp serves as a member of Engineering Advisory Boards to the United States Military Academy, the University of Maryland College Park, and the North Carolina Coastal Studies Institute Technical Advisory Committee. In addition, Sue is committed to expanding opportunities for engaging students, and volunteers many hours in STEM-related organizations.
