Dr. Sean Hinchberger has 18-yrs experience as a consulting geotechnical engineer. He has been involved on more than 50 engineering projects in Canada, the United States, and abroad, and has extensive experience in geotechnical site investigations, characterization of soil and rock, construction, foundation design, dam and dyke design, marine geotechnique, hydrogeology, tailings dam design and evaluation, and tunneling. Sean has had lead roles on large projects including the Irving Refinery Expansion Project (New Brunswick, Canada), Marietta Waste Retention Dam (Ohio, US), 52 storey Hampton Inn (Niagara Falls, Canada), Cliffs Chromite Mine Project (Attawapiskat, Canada) and the Brighton Beach Power Plant (Windsor, Canada). Between 2003 and 2009, Dr. Hinchberger established and ran a consulting engineering company (Sean Hinchberger Inc.) while working as a Professor of engineering at the University of Western Ontario (Western). In these roles, he served on a number of expert panels involved in the evaluation, design, and construction of tunnels and dams. In addition, he procured funding for and directed research teams investigating the engineering behavior of soft clay and marine sediments, seismic response of soils and structures embedded in soils, micro-piles and tunnel and shaft liner design. Dr. Hinchberger is currently Hatch Global Geotechnical Lead. He has over 40 technical publications with areas of specialization including: geomechanics, soft soil engineering, static and seismic soil-structure interaction, deep foundations, underground infrastructure, dams, and risk assessment.
