Dr. Deng is a Chief Scientist in Energy & Environment Directorate at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. He has been a principal investigator (PI) or co-PI for various water power and fish passage projects funded by Depart of Energy (DOE) Hydropower program, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and Public Utilities District. He co-developed the marine animal alert system using passive acoustics for DOE to support deployment of marine hydrokinetic energy devices. He is a co-developer of the Sensor Fish device, Juvenile Salmon Acoustic Telemetry System (JSATS) cabled system, injectable acoustic microtransmitter. Dr. Deng is also the lead engineer for the JSATS multi-dam performance studies in the Columbia River Basin for USACE. He has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and 60 government technical reports. He is an editor or board member for four peer-review journals. He was selected as one of 78 outstanding young engineers (30-45 years old) in the U.S. to participate the National Academy of Engineering’s Annual Symposium on Frontiers of Engineering in 2012. He was also selected as one of 30 outstanding young Scientist/Engineers (30-45 years old) in the U.S. to participate the National Academy of Sciences & NAE’s first Brazil-US Frontiers of Science and Engineering in 2014
