James A. Squires became President of Norfolk Southern Corporation on June 1, 2013 and was elected to the Norfolk Southern Board of Directors on January 21, 2014. Prior to becoming President, he served as Executive Vice President Administration (2012-2013); Executive Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer (2007-2012); Senior Vice President – Financial Planning (2006-2007); Senior Vice President – Law (2004-2006); and in various Law Department staff positions (1992-2004). Mr. Squires is a graduate of Amherst College where he received a B.A. in 1983 majoring in Ancient Greek. After graduation from Amherst, he spent a year as Amherst-Doshisha Fellow at Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan. He served in the U.S. Army from 1985-1989. In 1992, he received a J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School. In 2013 Mr. Squires was elected to the Board of Directors of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. He has served as a Trustee of the Norfolk Public Library and Sentara Healthcare system. In 2006 Governor Tim Kaine appointed Mr. Squires to serve as Chairman of Virginia's Transportation Accountability Commission, formed to ensure the Commonwealth’s transportation system delivers maximum value to taxpayers, and that state transportation agencies are held accountable for their performance. In 2012 Mr. Squires was named “Virginia Public Company CFO of the Year” by Virginia Business magazine.
