2019 Summer Spine Meeting

MIS-Endoscopy Technique Workshop (Room Kona Moku Salon BC)

Workshop Chairs: Jin-Sung Kim, MD; Pornpavit Sriphirom, MD; Jeffrey C. Wang, MD; Patrick C. Hsieh, MD, MS

This half-day intensive workshop demonstrates the recent evolution of endoscopic spinal surgery (ESS). Reflecting the higher unmet needs from the patients for minimally invasive spinal care based on ambulatory spine care, as well as consequent faster recovery, ESS has been well acclaimed from various minimally invasive spinal surgery (MISS) related societies around the globe recently. Novel advances in the field of endoscopic optics and miniaturized but reinforced surgical tools will be thoroughly scrutinized and compared to assess their future capabilities to replace the conventional ‘open’ surgeries under microscopic view. Discussions take place on lectures that illustrate common clinical scenarios that most spine practitioners face at their daily practices and their feasible solutions using spinal endoscopy, including surgical “tips and pearls” on these emerging percutaneous procedures.

Upon completion of this session, participants should gain strategies to:

  • Determine the basic steps of endoscopic procedures through intervertebral foramen and interlaminar window;
  • Assess the indications and contraindications of endoscopic procedures;
  • Recognize possible complications and discuss how to avoid the complications of the endoscopic spinal procedures;
  • Recognize the recent updates of full-endoscopic spine surgery and bi-portal endoscopic procedures.
