Thanks to National Sword last year, recycling has become the focus of our entire industry. While it is obviously a big issue, it doesn’t really deserve all the spotlight.In fact, fixing recycling will require that we zoom out and look at the entire solid waste system – from collections to disposal. Collections impacts how the transfer station operates, and how material is processed at a materials recovery facility can impact operations at the landfill. It is an integrated system that requires a holistic approach. This presentation will look at vastly complicated ways the entire system is interconnected, how to use process improvement to improve every step of the process, and how this type of approach can even help solve the industry’s safety challenges.
