Reducing Stormwater Level 2 Exceedances at Transfer Stations (Room Exhibit Hall Innovation Cafe)

Tracks: Recycling Operations

Do you manage a facility that is required to have an industrial generator permit? Have you been notified that your facility's pollutant loads are above the mandated stormwater quality standards established for your state? If so, then this session will provide information on how to lower exceedance rates. Culver City's 500 TPD transfer station transfers recyclables, solid waste, organics and C&D materials collected in-house from residential, commercial and industrial properties. Due to the daily operations of the facility, pollutants such as trash, oil & grease, bacteria, iron, copper, lead and zinc are found on site. These pollutants are picked up by rain water which flows into stormdrains that empty into creeks, bays and oceans. The transfer station is located directly adjacent to Ballona Creek which flows into Santa Monica Bay. The Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board considers Ballona Creek "impaired" due to the presence of many pollutants. Culver City was issued a Level 2 exceedance violation and was tasked with establishing Best Management Practices to reduce the level of pollutants flowing into the creek.
