(411) Pressure Injury Risk Assessment Tools: Past, Present and Future Implications for Clinical Practice (Room Grand Ballroom B-C)

This session will have two speakers presenting differing viewpoints on pressure injury risk assessment. First, Dr. Moore will discuss an international view point of pressure ulcer risk assessment. Second, Dr. Cox will discuss pressure injury risk assessment through the view point of practicing in the United States.

Part 1

Use of a risk assessment tool is recommended by many international pressure ulcer prevention guidelines, however it is not known whether using a risk assessment tool makes a difference to patient outcomes. We conducted a Cochrane systematic review to assess whether using structured, systematic pressure ulcer risk assessment tools, in any health care setting, reduces the incidence of pressure ulcers. This session will provide the results of the review.

Part 2

This session will explore the historical basis for formalized pressure injury risk assessment, our current practices and the future of risk assessment scales across various health care settings. The evidence behind the prevention practices that are based on risk assessment will also be discussed.
