Wind Project O&M and Safety Conference 2019

Integration of Wildlife Detection and Deterrent Systems (Room Crystal/Continental)

Over the past 15-20 years, stakeholders have learned more about direct impacts of wind energy development and operation to key species of birds and bats, but uncertainty remains about implications of these impacts for some species. As such, industry, conservation, research, and regulatory stakeholders have prioritized developing solutions to reduce impacts, including impact minimization technologies. Many commercially available or near available technologies have installation, integration, and operational challenges for wind energy operators. This presentation offers the first summary and synthesis of these challenges. Attendees will learn what technology innovators and vendors must consider as they develop technologies for end users. This work is a launching point for an initiative by the American Wind Wildlife Institute (AWWI) to raise awareness, identify expertise, and convene technical stakeholders to engage with technology developers and vendors on broadening technology R&D to address integration issues in addition to biological objectives.
