Automated Landfill Gas Collection (Room Ballroom B)

26 Feb 19
1:45 PM - 3:33 PM

Tracks: Landfill Gas and Biogas Symposium

A novel automated landfill gas collection system has demonstrated 10% – 20% increases in operator revenue by improving gas composition and flow at landfills across the US. Loci Controls and Enerdyne Power Systems will co-present a case study of a fully automated collection system for a landfill gas to pipeline high BTU project. The landfill, located in Lawrence, KS, is subject to rapid changes in ambient temperature and barometric pressure due to dynamic environmental conditions. Performance data from the landfill will highlight the impact of automation in improving gas collection system efficiency and uptime. The automated control algorithms used to optimize gas collection will be described and compared to traditional manual wellfield tuning.

Operators will learn how landfill gas automation can mitigate collection challenges stemming from:

  1. Barometric pressure changes that result in rapid changes in landfill gas composition
  2. Diurnal fluctuations in gas composition due to changes in ambient temperature

Participants will view live data with well and header readings for methane, pressure, temperature CO2, O2, and balance gas concentrations (N2, trace gasses). Attendees will also gain insight into the economics of implementing automation on a high BTU wellfield, the ROI operators have seen from systems, and typical increases in CH4 flow from landfills that are adopting new automated landfill gas collection services.
