The state of Hawaii is rapidly developing renewable energy strategies and advancing toward its goal of 100% clean energy by 2045. Hawaii’s wind resources make it an optimal candidate for offshore wind energy development, especially due to its limited available landmass for onshore renewable energy development. The new offshore frontier has several unique considerations that must be accounted for, including 1) tourism as an economic driver and potential visual impacts, 2) Native Hawaiian culture and public perspectives, 3) use of the ocean in Department of Defense training, 4) geologic features and the lack of a continental shelf, 5) biological resources and protected marine and avian species, and 6) city and state policies and procedures. This session would highlight lessons learned through previous Hawaii-based wind energy project work and case studies, and propose a guided process for successful offshore wind energy development in Hawaii.
