Identifying transferable skills requires research and investigation. In the UK, we assumed the oil and gas industry would provide ample skills to the wind sector. However, the disparity between the salaries and the preferred contracting model meant that transfer between the sectors, while desirable, did not materialise on mass. In addition, the culture of overengineering and a lesser focus on cost meant that those that did transfer often found reduced complexity and limited budgets prohibitive. Identifying transferable skills requires the wind industry to look at the economic and commercial realities of the talent pools, as well as, the suitability of skills. This paper will present data on relevant talent pools as evidenced by successful transfers in mature markets and mean salaries and employment models in the US within these transferable skills pools.
