Europe has ~4,000 offshore wind turbines operating (~2,000 pending) across 9 countries - all permitted under rigorous planning laws & environmental scrutiny. This presentation show-cases a detailed study reviewing the impacts of offshore wind (incl. floating) on wildlife. Supplemented with industry experience, it distills fact from fiction. Transferring decades of know-how to the US is the perfect test case. Yet the myriad of evidence, whilst highly applicable, is difficult to decipher. The audience will be informed of the choices; how to bridge knowledge gaps & why expert opinions can often provide contradictory yet credible views. To a non-specialist, this conveys mixed messages, which deepens the challenge of interpretation. Insights on all current & future mitigation measures are compared alongside monitoring options. Greater transferability will empower stakeholders & authorities to make informed decisions during outreach, BOEM leasing consultations & setting research objectives.
