Management of the archaeological resource, whether that be associated with shipwrecks, sunken aircraft, or the preservation of inundated palaeolandscapes, is a key part of the permitting process in offshore wind developments both in the US and the UK. Over the past 15 years, the UK offshore wind industry has grown and matured, and with that our approach to the management of cultural resources has also evolved. Productive and pragmatic approaches to efficiently investigating and mitigating the impacts on heritage have been developed and it has been shown that early engagement between developers, archaeologists, and regulators can increase cost-effective decision making and manage risks posed by impacting the cultural assets. Archaeology can also be effective in engaging stakeholders and the public on a regional and national level.
