Offshore WINDPOWER Conference & Exhibition 2018

Navigating Underwater Acoustic Requirements in the USA: Perspectives from Global Projects (Room Regency)

16 Oct 18
4:10 PM - 5:35 PM

Tracks: Siting, Wildlife & Environmental Monitoring

This presentation provides a high-level overview of offshore noise regulations in the USA and globally, with the goal of understanding how to lower costs through effective management of noise issues. DNV GL will draw on its extensive global knowledge of offshore wind and oil and gas infrastructure development projects to discuss existing regulations, variability in wildlife communities, and potential future regulatory changes. The discussion included potential mitigation options, including whether specific methods used globally are applicable in the USA directly, with some modifications or not at all. Discussion will focus on pile driving noise; however, vessel noise classification systems and other potential sources of acoustic emissions will be covered. Finally, the presentation will summarize how this topic can influence the environmental review process and how best to engage and coordinate with regulatory agencies.
