HOW Design Live 2019

[WORKSHOP] Visual Storytelling On The Page: Comic Book Writing & Art Live Demonstration (Room E271a)

07 May 19
10:15 AM - 11:30 AM

Tracks: Workshop

Learn how professional comic book creators outline, write, and draw a complete comic book page from beginning to end. Outlining, pacing, panel breakdown, and story arcs are discussed by professional editors, writers, artists, and colorists who work for mainstream publishers like Marvel, DC, Image, AfterShock, & Valiant.

This special panel is a live demonstration of the process, as we break down a single page of a published comic, including editing, writing, and penciling for a 360-degree overview. This is a highly interactive panel where working pros demonstrate the way comics are planned and created.

This live workshop is hosted by Buddy Scalera, who is a content strategist and marketer by day. By night, he is a comic book creator and educator with credits at Marvel Comics, including Deadpool and Weapon X. He's published six books on the craft and business of comic book storytelling. He teaches educational panels at comic book conventions, including New York Comicon, C2E2, and Long Beach Comicon.

He'll be joined by Chicago-based comic book creator Tim Seeley, who has credits at Marvel and DC comics, including Batman. Together they will show how comic book scripts are formatted and interpreted on the page.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  1. Comic book creative process from scripting to art
  2. Guiding and controlling the eye on the page
  3. Different ways to visualize and interpret the same script
