APDT's 25th Annual Conference

Training Shelter Dogs for Adoption (Room B Ballroom)

In this session Sara Levy-Taylor will share experiences and specific training exercises that increase adoption potential of shelter dogs, reduce stress and provide enrichment, using the HEAL program. She will share case studies of protective custody dogs and how they have been trained in the shelter, provided with remedial socialization and through tailored tailored training plans and the use of behavior modification, have been successfully adopted.

This session will explain the use of Operant and Classical conditioning and the Premack principle to teach behaviors to improve adoptability for the dogs living in a shelter environment. It will also incorporate the use of specific training exercises for dogs that are in varying states of stress and tailoring the training to the individual dog including for our long term dogs.
