Session 8 - The Blast Pattern – Advanced Technology from Design to Analysis (Room Capitol Ballroom 1-4; Fourth Floor)

25 Jan 20
4:10 PM - 5:00 PM
Speaker(s): Bob McClure
Transferring a well-designed blast pattern from a profile onto the bench can be a challenge. In the past the use of burden poles, tapes and pop-levels were used extensively. In some rare situations a survey transit and rod. Bad weather, rough terrain, bench heights and large blast patterns made it difficult or impossible to get the pattern surveyed and laid out accurately. Post-blast it was difficult to quantify the performance since it was dangerous or even impossible to survey hard to reach areas. The latest blasting technology is now providing the tools to help meet these challenges. Key areas of concern for the blast engineer such as mitigating flyrock and airblast, improving blast optimization can be safely and accurately addressed. UAV’s, photogrammetry, advanced blast design software, intelligent drills with navigation, drill mast setup and drill hole data collection are being used to provide a higher level of safety and performance. A seamless data flow, from profiling to analysis helps speed the process and minimizes potential errors. This presentation will discuss these technologies and the advantages they bring to the blast engineer.
