Session 4 - Critical Rules for Effective Use of Bulk Explosives (Room Capitol Ballroom 1-4; Fourth Floor)

25 Jan 20
11:20 AM - 12:10 PM
Speaker(s): Jeff Averett
Throughout the world, over the past 40 years, Bulk Explosives (Explosive, Blasting, Type E 1.5D UN 0332 II) have become the #1 power tool in the blasters tool box for the quarry and mining industries as well as for construction projects requiring large volume excavations of rock. Likewise Bulk Loading equipment has advanced during this period further enabling the “on bench” mixing and blending of: Ammonium Nitrate 5.1 UN 1942 III; UN 3375 Ammonium Nitrate Emulsion, 5.1 II; Carbonaceous Fuels; and trace chemicals to deliver at the blast hole, in addition to Explosive Blasting, Type B, 1.5D, UN 0331 II, many varieties of Bulk Explosive, Blasting, Type E 1.5D UN 0332 II with different properties and performance characteristics. The flexibility this enablement provides allows for “on bench” adjustments in the loading of blast holes or charges within a blast hole to provide optimized blast outcomes. The presentation addresses the “Always and Nevers” that cannot be overlooked when considering transportation, storage, handling, loading and application of bulk explosives or a bulk explosive’s critical precursor materials. Ammonium Nitrate Prill 5.1 III, Emulsion Matrix 5.1 II, augered ANFO 1.5D, augered Heavy ANFO blends 1.5D, Repumpable Emulsions 1.5 D and Repumpable Emulsion blends 1.5 D, all are addressed. The importance of: compatibility of materials; maintenance and cleaning of storage tanks and towers; use of only approved pumps; safety shut down systems; periodic calibration of equipment; proper loading practices; and in field quality control are emphasized.
