Session 2 - Demolition of Pier E3 – San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge Removal Project (Room Capitol Ballroom 1-4; Fourth Floor)

25 Jan 20
8:20 AM - 9:10 AM
Speaker(s): Kenneth Tully
The removal of the old San Francisco / Oakland Bay Bridge (SFOBB) was conducted from 2015 through 2018 by Kiewit/ Manson Joint Venture. Early in the development of the demolition specifications Caltrans decided that blasting of the in-water piers would be the favorable preferred method with advantages in both cost and schedule. Blasting in the waters of California had been conducted very rarely and never to the magnitude that SFOBB would require. Contract Drilling & Blasting, with Mr. Tully as the Controlled Blasting Specialist, were asked to be part of the Kiewit/Manson project team, which was successful in being awarded the contract for the removal of Pier E3 as a demonstration blast. The blasting of pier E3 went as planned and resulted in blasting being the approved method for the removal of an additional 16 piers. The difficult and challenging aspects of both obtaining approval for and conducting the drilling and blasting for Pier E3 will be the topic of Mr. Tully’s presentation.
