Job Shop Costing and Estimating

Unique Benefits of Finite Capacity Scheduling for Complex Job Shops
Although many job shops are small in size and revenue, they are difficult for production management. The difficulty arises because those shops usually engage in order-driven, high-variety production using limited resources. Several jobs may simultaneously progress along respective routings while competing for shared resources. Bottlenecks keep changing over time due to changes in product mix. Two major problems faced by job shops are how to find a rational lead time and a right production start time for each new order. Many job shops find it difficult to predict the progress and finish times of jobs. Production control and management will not be efficient without such prediction. Properly implemented finite capacity scheduling provides such workflow prediction and enables what-if analysis with respect to any changes in the system. The purpose of this talk is to demonstrate how finite capacity scheduling can uniquely address difficult issues regularly faced by most job shops.
