Tracks: Speaker

Pianist and Mensan Rob Kovacs, a.k.a. 88bit, masterfully performs on piano and talks about the early computer music found in the original Nintendo (NES) games. The sound chip inside the NES was limited to three voices and a noise channel but powerful in that it could play any pitch, any interval, at any speed, allowing composers to create music that acoustic instruments would never be able to play. With more than 600 games licensed for the Nintendo, much of this music has been forgotten about. Kovacs’ aim with his 88bit project is to shed light on some of this groundbreaking music, as well as to push the boundaries of what's possible on the piano, taking what was once made only for computers and recreating it as a mere human.
