Espionage is the only area of study where deception and lies are not only studied but encouraged. For all countries’ intelligence communities, all information, regardless of source or authority, has value. A belief that a pizza parlor is harboring a child pornography and sexual abuse ring may be false, but if someone acts on it, it’s just as important to know about as the criminals who are planning to rob the same pizza parlor. How do we study deception? How do we determine its value to the intelligence community and society? This talk will look at deception from several different perspectives, with a brief exercise for audience members to create their own deception.
