Motivation and Development of the AAR-2A Wheel Profile: Wheel/rail life extension can be achieved by better control of wheel and rail profiles and maintenance procedures. A new wheel profile (AAR-2A profile) was designed to improve vehicle curving performance and reduce RCF and wear of the wheel and rail in the early stage of wheel life. In 2016, AAR’s WABL committee voted to allow the AAR-2A as an alternate wheel profile for turned wheels with the stated intention of eliminating the AAR-1B profile effective January 1, 2019.
