The National Socialist Third Reich is well known for fighting the Second World War with guns representing the pinnacle of engineering. While Germany certainly produced firearms designs that succeeded on the battlefield, it could not produce enough to keep up with the broad ambitions that drove the nation to war. Kriegsbeute -"war booty" - filled in the balance of the small arms firepower that brought conflict to North Africa and Europe. Rifles, pistols and machine guns from other European countries, the Soviet Union and even the United States ultimately did much of Hitler's fighting.
