HBLC 2019

General Session | Outside-the-Box Mental Health Strategies (Room Juniper 2-4)

Greater than 1 million Americans died between 2006 and 2015 from drug overdoses, alcohol use and suicides. These three public health crises are major contributing factors to the decrease in the U.S. life expectancy. And, according to recently published research, only 17 percent of participants in a long-term study did not develop a mental health disorder — even briefly — between birth and middle age. The outcomes of this study indicate we are more likely to experience a bout of mental illness than we are to acquire diabetes, heart disease or any kind of cancer. This panel will discuss workplace approaches to addressing mental health that go beyond traditional employee-assistance programs.
