From a machine builder perspective the digital twin is the digital representation of a real machine.It does not matter whether it already exists in the real. The use of digital twins is a symbol of optimized machine engineering. It stands for efficiency, short changeover times and error-free operation. The digital twins can be distinguished by degrees of detail and complexity regarding geometry, function and simulation. The presentation describes the generation and use of digital twins in the SMS engineering process.The process from simulation through virtual production to final production plant is presented showing a chain of several hot forming processes.
