The use of virtual reality to visualize strip flatness over longer lengths than is possible with traditional camera-based systems could be of great value. A method has been developed to visualize the flatness of a strip and overlay user-selected key data such as defects onto the strip. The user can adjust the “field of view” as well as virtually scan forward and back along the finished and potentially coiled strip to aid in identifying the defect. The system has been tested on data in a simulation environment, and the results are encouraging.
