An Automated Quantitative Assessment of Slab Centerline Segregation Using Image Analysis (Room 411)

Big River Steel is engaged in the production of hot-rolled skelp for oil and gas pipelines requiring sound and clean internal microstructure. Based on recent customers' directives, an image processing technique was developed to map and quantify segregation spots across the full width of slab. Using adaptive thresholding and foreground extraction algorithms, dimensional attributes of segregation spots were quantified using spatial image calibration. This technique allowed the quantification of the degree of segregation across the width of the slab and thus may aid in the development of a more meaningful industry standard for determining the severity of chemical segregation.
