Managing Titania-Bearing Products in Blast Furnace Ironmaking (Room 404)

06 May 19
9:30 AM - 10:00 AM

Tracks: Ironmaking

Titania-bearing minerals used in blast furnace ironmaking satisfy two needs: as a ferrous burden component and for hearth campaign extension. Little has been published on strategic planning and trade-offs when deploying titania products for hearth protection and refractory temperature control. Understanding the barriers that exist for successful use of titania-bearing materials can help the blast furnace operator manage hearth erosion. This paper provides real-world experiences gained from several periods of titania additions. Experiences will be presented relating to raw materials resourcing and handling; effective refractory temperature control; economics; titania product quality; and operating know-how, including rules of thumb.
