OSHA Silica Rule - How SDI Is Achieving Compliance

OSHA has issued a new respirable crystalline silica standard for general industry. This paper discusses how Steel Dynamics Inc. (SDI) was able to achieve compliance with the new crystalline silica rule through a very well-planned exposure assessment (including historical data and potential exposure risks for silica). The sampling plan captured the highest-risk areas first without having to sample every person with multiple samples. Statistical analytical tools were used to determine exposure compliance, variability, confidence and reproducibility. Finally, the paper will review how SDI addressed areas of concern with potential exposures.
