Not all people and materials can withstand the extreme and demanding environment of a steel mill. This presentation describes a situation where an inspection of fall protection systems in a meltshop identified wear and stress on horizontal lifelines used for access to the meltshop crane and bridge. The presenter will share how a customized solution was developed using a conceptual design phase, which considers the environmental influences, extracts stakeholder knowledge, defines critical capabilities, and assures compliance and safety. Additionally, this process allows stakeholders to discuss, debate and select a solution prior to investing in engineering design or equipment.
