Market competitiveness requires steel producers to check the finished or intermediate products as soon as possible to get rapid feedback about size and quality. The SMS-TBK laser gauges are capable of accurately measuring the complete shape as well as detect surface defects, in a continuous mode and hot off the mill, giving immediate results before the bar hits the bed. Further, closed-loop controls have been developed for automatic roll setting to the required adjustment values based on the measurement results. Tailor-made solutions allow customization to specific needs. State of the art review and recent U.S. references will be presented.
