In Rizhao, China, Shandong Iron & Steel built a new flat steel production facility with a capacity of 8.5 million tons per year. The entire plant, from steelmaking and casting, to hot and cold rolling, down to strip processing (e.g., continuous annealing and galvanizing), features on-line, real-time product quality control by the SMS PQA system. This design, being the first installation in an integrated steel plant for flat production with multiple equipment suppliers and automation systems, will be explained, and up-to-date results will be presented.
