Changes to inclusions upon solidification must be understood to fully describe inclusion evolution during steel processing. This study examined inclusions in laboratory-scale steel ingots containing 3 wt.% Mn and 0.5, 1.5 and 3 wt.% Si. Inclusions were characterized at several locations through the ingot thickness. The steel was Al-killed and predominantly Al2O3 inclusions were observed. Special attention was needed for filtering at high Si levels. There was an increase in inclusion Ca content with higher Si levels. This was attributed to Ca impurities in the Si additions. The differences in inclusion chemistry and size distributions through thickness will be discussed.
