Influence of Fluxes in Steel Desulfurization (Room 409)

The present paper has the objective of proposing desulfurizing mixtures capable of producing steels with a sulfur content of less than 20 ppm. Desulfurizing mixtures based on CaO-Al2O3-CaF2/Na2O were proposed. Equilibrium conditions were simulated using the composition of the mixtures and the steel in the computer thermodynamics software. The tests were carried out in a induction furnace under the temperature of 1,600°C. The mixtures of CaF2 were more efficient, whereas the Na2O addition improved the efficacy of the process when it was added in the pre-melted form or by immersion.
