During hot rolling of strips, process disturbances are common. Temperature drops caused by rolling delays or variations in the chemical composition of the rolling stock cause variations in the mechanical strip properties. SMS group developed several technological models of property prediction and adapted them to practical measured results. Improved prediction quality now allows for providing recommendations for rolling process changes in order to achieve target values. Assistance systems predict the mechanical strip properties and/or provide recommendations to change the process (rolling speed, cooling pattern/rate, etc.). Strip quality can be assured or optimized dynamically during rolling operation.
