While most special educators understand the IDEA's least restrictive environment mandate, case law developments and modern placement innovations have raised complicated issues. Attorney Jose Martín will address the challenges of complying with the LRE requirement in difficult situations, including preschool programs in rural areas, extended school year services, and homebound settings. In addition, the session will explore emerging placements that appear to defy traditional LRE analysis, such as online programs with some electronic peer-to-peer interaction, distance learning with live video and audio capacities, and robot-assisted home-based instruction. In each area, Jose will share practical ideas for facilitating LRE decision-making.
